She always lands on her feet, but can she fall in love? The first meeting between free spirit Pip and stressed workaholic Zac does not go well. Their next encounters are not much more successful, and yet they both keep on thinking about the other and how unsuitable they are - 'Weirdo', thinks Zac. 'Nuts', thinks Pip. It really doesn't look as though Philippa McCabe, who earns her living as a clown, entertaining children at parties and in hospital wards, and Zac Holmes, with his high-powered career as an accountant, will ever get it together, in spite of a rather sweet chaste first date. Pip convinces herself that hot sex without commitment is all she needs; left parentless and brought up by an eccentric uncle who doesn't consider crumble with Jelly Babies unusual, from childhood she has taken on the responsibility for her two younger sisters. Used to keeping her problems to herself, she wouldn't dream of turning to anyone else for help or revealing the reasons for her lifestyle. Self-contained Zac adores his son from an earlier relationship and enjoys some pretty hot sex himself with snooty Juliana, while Pip spends afternoons in bed with a good-looking doctor, Caleb, and has a graphically described one-night stand in France. These extra entanglements lead to further confusions and physical and emotional cartwheels for our heroine and for the man we know to be her true love; they try to forget each other, convinced their feelings are not returned, but courage and a little help and insight from friends and family bring the story to a happy conclusion. Freya North's breezy and witty style keep the story bubbling along nicely; the well-researched background to Pip's clowning adds an extra dimension to the hiccupping relationship between the lovers, who are appealing and three-dimensional.
