Best known as a painter and printmaker, James McNeill Whistler (1834 – 1903) was also an influential designer of domestic interiors, and played a crucial role in the display of fine art in late 19th century Britain and America. Whistler was one of the first artists to realize that he could better promote his work by taking advantage of exhibition spaces offered by the commercial art galleries springing up in Paris and London. Showcasing rarely exhibited oils, pastels, and watercolors, Mr Whistler’s Gallery explores the influential exhibition of the artist’s own work in May 1884 at the Dowdeswell Gallery in London. His design showed off his work to good effect, transforming the show into an event where even the guards were part of the color scheme. Published in association with the Freer Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, this beautifully designed book presents a new exploration of Whistler’s remarkable aesthetic vision.
