The central character of this novel, set in South Africa in the 1930s, is Glanvill Peake, a young well-educated Zulu with a burning ambition to become a writer. When he meets Marie Seddon, daughter of a rich white family, she encourages him to preserve with writing. But he finds he is drawn reluctantly-because he wants to devote his energy to literature-but inevitably-because of his bitter experiences-into the African political struggle. After his activities have brought him into contact with Africans of every class and race, he finds success, but not without an element of tragedy.
