In 2006, Mudac, Lausanne, issued a summons to the animal kingdom. From social phenomenon to contemporary art, it became clear that changes are occurring and men are forging new relationships with animals and the animal kingdom that we know so little about and yet live alongside. Animals reveal things about us; the way we regard and represent them speaks of our times and our fantasies, acting as a mirror for our desires and contradictions. This book and the accompanying exhibition is divided into seven sections. The first is dedicated to the symbolic power of our relationships with animals, explored through nature, origins, mythology and taboos, followed by a look at fables, tales and satire through texts, drawings and illustrations. Another section is on accessories of all kinds which draws attention to the consumer definition of the relationship between men and animals. A source of fascination and boundless inspiration for designers, animals have been used for a wide range of objects. Zoomorphism is the key to this section in which tables, chairs, lamps, crockery and high-tech gadgets conjure up the gait, features, color or shape of some animal or another.
