In pioneering age of oil and gas production science had little effect on progress. The situation in the 20th and particularly in the 21st century radically changed: science is the driving force of all progress and there is no advance in innovation without extensive fundamental and applied research. It is not an exaggeration that, similarly to military and space technology, the oil and gas industry is the most knowledge-dependent productive segment of the society. The facts, that countries consuming major fraction of hydrocarbons globally produced are usually oil and gas depleted areas, put up the value of genuineness, skill, competence, and experience in R&D activity. However, we should never forget that our targets are non-renewable natural resources. Therefore, our responsibility for the future generation must be a part of our philosophy not only in recovery of oil and gas, but also in their utilization. Consequently, energy efficiency, as a term, is general and global; and it must be omnipresent through the whole spectrum of the innovation chain.
In recent years, we are living in a turbulent period. Although the recession has a dramatic effect on global oil consumption, the recovery from paralyzed economy is always accompanied by soaring demand.
