Kate Fox has already published a book on the etiquette observed among race-goers in Britain. As a social scientist she acknowledges this discipline's penchant for concentrating on the negatives in human behaviour and in British culture. "Watching the English" shows up many of the foibles of English culture but counter-balances this nicely with beautiful observations. The premise is that there are many, many rules by which the English are guided although many of these are hidden and some are positively enigmatic. In this book Kate Fox hits so many nails on the head and, being English herself, probably won't want to be praised like this. I hadn't read a book for quite a while and this has reignited my love of reading. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone wanting to get an insight into English culture (especially English people)and why we English "have houses instead of social skills"!
