This is a short and informal but extremely engaging history of the Malaysian "emergency"--nowadays cited as a prime example of "how to do counterinsurgency right." It reads as well as any thriller, in fact considerably better than most thrillers. The author knows how to focus on key characters at key moments, pick just the right number of them that you can follow the story without much difficulty, and give you just enough details to keep it interesting and relevant. He does his best to view the situation from both the Colonial and Communist sides, so that both remain human. And in a quick but absorbing read he shows you the judicious mix of law enforcement, intelligence, military, and political solutions that defeated the insurgents in the end.
