Publication of The Thaw stirred up a controversy in Russian letters that is not yet over. Here is the first contemporary Russian novel to challange the dominance of that socialist realism which had so coloured the Stalinist era. Mr. Ehrenburg has produced the sharpest criticism of that period yet produced by a Soviet writer, but his novel with its curious quality of evoking that helpless vulnerability which is the fate of all lovers, is essentially about the private, not public, lives of Soviet people.
