Wildlife on your Doorstep - The Living Countryside

Összefoglaló
Ismertető: At first sight our towns and cities seem extremely inhospitable to wildlife. It is indeed true that the more timid or demanding species shun urban areas, but many others thrive in cities, which are surprisingly green places and offer diverse habitats. Some plants and animals have simply followed their natural foodplants or nesting situations into towns wherever they have occurred, adapting to the increased level of disturbance. There is no shortage of plants in towns. For example, a survey in Edinburgh revealed over one million trees in the city, at a considerably higher density than in the surrounding countryside. Similarly, there are over a million acres of gardens in Britain, most of them in towns and cities, and most mature gardens contain two to three hundred species of plants. So, many plant-eating or tree-dwelling animals, whether they are moths and butterflies, or goldfinches nesting in an apple tree, can feel as much at home in towns as in the country.- További ismertető.
