American Sketches portrays the hunters of the American Dream, as described by Tibor Csipan in this series of short stories. In the story titled "Snake Island," the anti-hero, a Florida devel-oper, knows that "blueprints, standing on solid legal pilings, are the crux of the matter of any marshland." The heady nature of "Success" is shown in a story about the dizzying pace of a broker's life. Strangely, a plastic pool from Wal-Mart engulfs a troubled couple in "The Pond," while in "The First Encounter," the narrator, delegated to represent benign humanity to space aliens, wonders what went awry. These are sketches drawn with swift strokes by the hand of a keenly satirical observer, mixing horror with humor.
TIBOR CSIPAN, formerly a clinical psychologist and social science researcher in his native Hungary, says that he "defected to journalism" on coming to the U.S. in 1983. The author of many works published in Hungarian, from poetry to scientific papers, he devoted thirteen years to learning English before this victorious assault. Most recently, in summer 2002, his novel Kalliope, translated from English, was published in Hungary.
