Adrian Mole from Minor to Major: The Mole Diaries - The First Ten Years......The jottings of teenage diarist Adrian Mole, on school, home, parents and the irresistible Pandora......-
...-When I first discovered 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 and 3/4' I was around the same age as Adrian. I was so busy trying to identify with Adrian, I missed most of the humour.
Re-reading the first three Adrian Mole books in 'From Major to Minor' at the age of 32 has been a joy. I found them hilarious. Adrian is a neurotic, hypochondriac young man. He thinks himself an intellectual, though he's actually quite dim. He aims to be a great writer, but his writing (sampled in his diary) is very, very bad.
Adrian Mole's memoirs can be read and enjoyed by just about everyone. As a teenager, I identified with Adrian's 'no one understands my angst' attitude. As an adult I found his neuroses and misunderstandings highly amusing!
'From Minor to Major' takes Adrian from 13 to 23. Sue Townsend has created a realistic, three dimensional character. For all his faults, Adrian comes across as being real, and ultimately his heart is usually in the right place. I look forward to reading 'The Wilderness Years' and 'The Capuccino Years'.
