The 123 black-and-white and color photographs feature infants held by mothers or fathers, twins cuddling together in various poses, women carrying infants, and many other imaginatively rendered tableaux. The variety of the photographs is remarkable, especially given the singularity of the subject, and each one is beautifully executed. A few of the photographs are a bit stylized, but the theme of the book as a whole succeeds admirably. Geddes (Down in the Garden), whose earlier photographs of babies gained widespread popularity, set out to make this volume "a celebration of the very essence of new life-the beauty, innocence, and promise of every newborn." Aptly titled, this collection of technically and aesthetically exquisite photographs is imbued with grace and hope. It will be a welcome addition to all photography collections but will also be enjoyed by anyone who simply likes babies-what can be sweeter and more charming than a newborn contentedly snoozing in its mother's arms? Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries.

In 1956, in the wake of the Hungarian Revolution, Plachy and her parents escaped into Austria carrying only a small valise. She returned to Hungary eight years later, this time with a camera in hand. Through the gently subversive images gathered here, her life is revealed via clues, fragments of words, and pictures as if by someone looking into a mirror and seeing her life pass before her eyes-not linearly like a film, but rather in layers.

Curtis, taken in the early 20th century, are here winnowed to a tiny fraction of their bulk and considered within their artistic and cultural contexts by scholars Martha H. Kennedy, Martha A. Sandweiss, Mick Gidley and Duane Niatum. However one feels about Curtis's project, it's hard not to be impressed by its scope: The North American Indian, which constitutes about one-third of his total oeuvre, consists of 20 volumes of large photogravures and 20 volumes of illustrated text on more than 80 tribal groups which the 91 photos here can only begin to suggest. Kennedy notes "a widespread tendency to regard Plains Indians as representative... of all American Indians." Sandweiss describes how Curtis conceived of himself "as the Herodotus of a dying race" in his systematic cataloguing of his subjects.

Ever since, Magnum's intrepid photographers have crisscrossed the country's striking landscape from the Central Asian steppes to the parched southern desert by way of the Hindu Kush mountains surrounding Kabul and the adjacent Panjshir Valley. As early as the 1950s, Eve Arnold and Marc Riboud filed unprecendented stories from a legendary Shangri-la, showing a small kingdom struggling for statehood against the forces of underdevelopment and unfortunate geographic position during the Cold War. The ultimate overthrow of the monarchy and brutal liquidation of Afghanistan's consitutional government in 1978 heralded the arrival of Soviet-style communism. Peasants in Nuristan rebelled immediately and initiated a jihad that was covered first by Raymond Depardon and then by Stever McCurry, and later by renowned photojournalist Abbas, who also focused on the progress of the jihad, which eventually faced a massive Red Army invasion and savage aerial bombardments. The victory against the Soviets also signaled the beginning of a civil war that began in 1992. Documented by Luc Delahaye, Christopher Steele-Perkins, Abbas, and Stever McCurry, Afghan militias destroyed large swathes of Kabul. The Taliban militia subdued warring factions in 1996 and proclaimed an Islamic emirate. Steele-Perkins was one of the few journalists to report from Afghanistan during this period of theocratic tyranny. In the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States, the hated Taliban were shaken from power by a loose alliance of mujahidin backed by American forces. Yet nothing seemed to remedy the miserable spectacle of a ruined country littered with ten million land mines and thousands of innocent victims of the hi-tech war on terror. The future of Afghanistan, as depicted by Abbas, Eve Arnold, Luc Delahaye, Thomas Dworzak, Alex Majoli, Steve McCurry, and Francesco Zizola, remains uncertain at best. Containing additional photographic work by Ian Berry, Elliott Erwitt, Stuart Franklin, Philip Jones Griffiths, Susan Meiselas, and Wayne Miller, commentary by the photographers, and several illustrated essays, Arms Against Fury will become an indispensable reference for documentary studies, social history, and critical photography.

Since then its collection has been steadily built up into one of the world's finest. Consequently, it outgrew it original premises. This guide was published to coincide with the opening of the new purpose-built gallery, designed by Rafael Moneo, and contains extended commentaries and full-page colour illustrations of over 75 key works from the museum's permanent collections. An introductory essay and illustrated chronology charts the colourful history of Moderna Muset and the progress of the new building. From the early 1960s the Museum has had an illustrious history of special exhibitions highlighting such movements as Kinetic Art, American Pop Art and Post-Modernism, as well as the work of such brilliant individuals as Paul Klee, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Bill Viola.

Norma Jean has inspired and created more headlines than any other movie actress - yet her marriages, affairs and life choices all distract us from the talent of this very beautiful woman. Part of the successful "Life in pictures" series, this book presents Marilyn at her very best. Following her from toddler to teen, to one of Hollywood's best-loved celebrities, we gain a unique insight into her life, loves and career. Over 160 pictures represent impressive iconographic research, including personal photos, images from national archives, private collections and press agencies - some not published before. Famous quotes on and from Monroe further reveal the thoughts of her closest friends, collaborators and admirers. This is both a unique collection and a visual reminder of why Marilyn has endured as one of our most fascinating and best-loved Hollywood stars.

As a photographer I couldn't have found a finer task for myself."Attachment (Kötődés), Péter Korniss' book of photographs taken between 1967- and 2008, opens with these words. In it we can find some of the best known pictures from his successful books HEAVEN'S BRIDEGROOM, PASSING TIMES, THE GUEST WORKER and INVENTORY, together with photographs that have never been published before, as well as some of his latest works. The book outlines the gradual disappearance and change in the traditional East European peasant way of life and culture. Péter Korniss speaks in a personal tone with great empathy about a world which he has spent more than 40 years photographing."As a documentary photographer I always wanted to be objective, but I knew in myself that this was impossible. I knew that my character, knowledge and experiences determined what and how I saw something, and the way I would photograph it.The message of the pictures was decided before I'd released the shutter."
